More than 3 million Americans suffer from this speech disorder, which affects three times more men than women. Stuttering can turn everyday tasks like answering the phone into a paralyzing experience. When a person stutters their normal flow of speech is disrupted by repetitions or prolongations or complete blockings of sounds. Characteristics of stuttering (PDS) include:

Repetitions of sounds
Prolongation, or stretching of sounds or syllables
Pauses or hesitations between words
Speech that occurs in spurts
Related behaviors such as muscle tension in the lips, the jaw and neck
A feeling of loss of control such as situational fears, embarrassment and shame
Onset in school age children

Researchers are still unsure as to what causes stuttering. Recently an investigational medication has been found to improve the symptoms of Persistent Developmental Stuttering (PDS). If you are between the ages of 18 – 65 and developed stuttering prior to the age of 8, you may qualify for a free research study. Our studies offer free study-related medical evaluation and study-related medication.
